More affordable rail fares needed to help businesses switch to rail as new data reveals rail is always greener
Responding to the publication of data showing that journeys along 100 of Britain’s busiest business routes create significantly less carbon emissions by rail compared to travelling by car, Michael Solomon Williams, from charity Campaign for Better Transport, said:
“Travelling by train is always greener than driving, and it’s getting even greener as more rail routes are electrified. It is often quicker too, but what we now need to do is to ensure it is also cheaper. Next week’s rail fare rise will do little to address the rising cost of rail travel, so we urge Government to expediate rail reforms to help make trains more affordable. Businesses can also do their bit to reduce transport emissions by having a ‘rail first’ travel policy and encouraging employees to take the train when travelling with work.”

Notes to Editors
New data from the Rail Delivery Group shows that you can substantially decrease emissions if you switch from car to train for business travel across Britain. The data revealed that taking the train on the top 100 business routes in Britain is:
- Almost nine times greener than using a petrol/diesel car
- More than four times greener than using a plug-in hybrid electric car
- Almost two-and-a-half times greener than using a battery electric car.
