New opt-in telematics option for eVED welcomed

14 July 2026

Responding to the publication of the Government’s response to the Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) public consultation, Silviya Barrett, Director of Policy and Research at Campaign for Better Transport, said:

“The introduction of eVED in April 2028 is an important and timely step towards fairer vehicle taxation and any delay would have only created uncertainty. We’re pleased that the Government has listened to stakeholders about the need to provide more choice in how vehicle mileage can be reported. Drivers opting to use their vehicle’s existing telematics technology will benefit from a quicker, easier-to-use and more accurate system. We also welcome the simplifications for fleets and leasing companies, which better reflect the way these businesses operate.

“We will now continue working with Government on the details of the scheme and accompanying measures, such as the cost of public electric vehicle charging review, to ensure that electric vehicles remain an attractive and affordable choice for drivers and the transition remains on track.”
