Premier League air mile table released
A different kind of Premier League table has been released. This one is based on how far it’s estimated teams have flown throughout the season.
The table was compiled by Carbon Boot, a campaign group that’s aims to tackle Premier League clubs’ damaging habit of flying to domestic away games.
Domestic flights create 246g of CO2 per passenger kilometre travelled and cause seven times more emissions than rail travel.
Using information from Flightradar24, Carbon Boot tracked clubs’ flights since the start of the 24/25 season. Now, after 20 rounds of fixtures, they have released a table, which shows several clubs have already travelled thousands of miles by plane.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their geography, Newcastle United top the table, appearing to travel over 4,500 miles this season. But it’s Manchester United and Liverpool who feature in second and third place respectively, with estimated air miles of over 2,300. It looks like the greenest teams, in terms of air miles are Crystal Palace and Brentford, with Carbon Boot’s research yet to find a flight for either team.
Peter Crisp from Fossil Free Football, which supports the campaign, said: “Fans know that travelling to matches sustainably isn’t rocket science because they do it by road and rail week in week out. It’s time for all clubs to follow the lead of Brentford and Crystal Palace and get serious about slashing pollution by ruling out taking domestic flights”.
Michael Solomon Williams from Campaign for Better Transport, which also supports the campaign, added: “This table shows that it is possible to cut down on flights and still perform on the pitch. Premier League clubs should be leading by example when it comes to reducing their impact on the planet and taking the train or coach to more matches, rather than flying.”
