Building better transport together: Why Bauer Media Outdoor supports Campaign for Better Transport
The infrastructure that supports our public transport network is crucial to its success, and to people’s experience of getting around; so we are delighted to have the support of Bauer Media Outdoor. In this guest blog, Product Design Director Neil Chapman explains why Bauer Media Outdoor is supporting Campaign for Better Transport.
“Modern transport infrastructure is about far more than helping people move from one place to another. It shapes how people feel about their town or city, connects people and communities, powers the local economy and is a key driver for reducing congestion and emissions.
That’s why Bauer Media Outdoor proudly supports Campaign for Better Transport. And as the UK continues to invest in more sustainable and accessible public transport, the conversation no longer focuses solely on vehicles and routes. The passenger experience, infrastructure quality, safety and public confidence are now equally important in encouraging more people to choose public transport.
As a transport infrastructure partner, we see this every day through the infrastructure we deliver and maintain across communities and transport networks.
Infrastructure plays a critical role in public transport success
Bus stops and shelters are often the most visible and most frequently used part of a transport network. They represent the point where passengers directly experience public transport infrastructure. We know from our own research that many factors contribute directly to passenger confidence, perceptions of safety and reliability, including:
- Accessible and comfortable designs
- Well-lit waiting environments
- Protection from the weather
- Real-time passenger information
- Reliable maintenance
These are not simply design considerations. They’re factors that influence behaviour, support modal shift, and encourage greater use of public transport.
However, as private car use remains slightly above pre-pandemic levels, we should ensure that bus infrastructure plays its full role in attracting more passengers and becomes a key lever for local and transport authorities to increase public transport use.
Supporting transport strategies through long-term thinking
Arguably, one of the most exciting recent announcements was the Department for Transport’s Better Connected: A Strategy for Integrated Transport, which sets out a long-term vision for a more connected transport system across England. For infrastructure providers, one of the most important themes is that transport should be designed around people, place, and partnership, with accessibility and safety embedded by default.
Whether the impetus is this policy, a bus service improvement plan, Bus Back Better, devolution, or regional and local transport strategies, most authorities are working towards the same set of ambitious goals: greater network reliability, passenger growth, decarbonisation, reduced congestion, social inclusion, economic growth, improved air quality and a meaningful shift away from private car use.
Delivering on those goals depends on infrastructure that is strategically designed and managed across its full lifecycle. As an organisation, we believe infrastructure should never be seen as a short‑term installation. It is a long‑term public asset that retains its value and should continue to deliver benefits for 10, 15, or even 20 years.
That means embedding lifecycle planning, predictive maintenance, supply chain resilience, sustainability and adaptability for future technologies from the very start of a project.
This whole‑life approach improves reliability, cuts reactive maintenance and helps safeguard long‑term public investment.
Why collaboration matters
One of the core reasons Bauer Media Outdoor supports Campaign for Better Transport is the shared belief that meaningful progress happens through collaboration. Delivering better transport requires strong partnerships between authorities, operators, infrastructure providers, communities and industry organisations.
Public–private collaboration can help unlock innovation, improve accessibility, and reduce pressure on public funding while maintaining high standards of governance and accountability. When done properly, it creates better outcomes not just for individual locations, but for entire transport networks.
A shared commitment to better places
We believe infrastructure is ultimately about people and places. Bus stops and the spaces around them are part of everyday life. They are used by families, commuters, students and local communities. They shape perceptions of public transport and contribute to the character and accessibility of towns and cities.
Supporting Campaign for Better Transport reflects our commitment to helping create:
- More sustainable transport networks
- Better passenger experiences
- More accessible communities
- Cleaner and safer public environments
Because successful infrastructure isn’t just about the shelter itself, it’s about strategy, partnership, long-term stewardship, and creating transport systems that work better for everyone.
Better Transport Week
Bauer Media Outdoor is the headline sponsor of Better Transport Week 2026.
“Better transport – transport that is safe, accessible, affordable, reliable, integrated and green – does amazing things. It connects communities and brings people together; creates a thriving economy and revitalises local areas; it’s good for our health and wellbeing; and it cleans up our air and tackles climate change.”
