Plane Speaking – Moving journeys from air to rail
Aviation makes a significant contribution to the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, a contribution which has steadily risen over time, yet the Government's strategy for reducing aviation's climate impact relies on future technologies. This report makes the case for demand management and modal shift from plane to train to reduce emissions now. It looks at the top 23 domestic and UK to Europe flights with a direct rail equivalent to see how they compare on cost, journey time, productivity and carbon emissions and what policies need to be put in place to help shift the balance towards more sustainable transport modes.
